I/O monitoring

• The duration of an I/O operation is often unpredictable

• When an I/O operation terminates, the status register of the I/O interface must be checked to determine whether the I/O operation was carried out succesfully

• Two main techniques to monitor an I/O operation: polling mode and interrupt mode
